Streetlight Replacements Reduce Nighttime Violent Crime
The Newark Public Safety Collaborative (NPSC) played a leading role in developing and implementing a place-based crime prevention strategy that used crime data, spatial analysis, and cross-sector partnerships to improve public safety. Working closely with the City of Newark and PSE&G, NPSC identified locations where violent crime and inadequate lighting overlapped, helping prioritize those areas for LED streetlight upgrades.
Beyond providing analytical support, NPSC facilitated collaboration among government agencies, researchers, community stakeholders, and utility providers to ensure that resources were directed where they could have the greatest impact. The initiative reflects NPSC’s commitment to evidence-informed, community-centered public safety strategies that address the environmental conditions associated with crime.
An evaluation of the project found substantial reductions in violent crime in areas receiving enhanced lighting, demonstrating how data-driven improvements to the built environment can contribute to safer neighborhoods and an improved quality of life for residents.
