Implementing a Data-Informed Community Engagement Program to Reduce Auto Thefts

Auto thefts in Newark have nearly doubled in 2023 (compared to the previous year). The leading problem related to this unprecedented increase in auto thefts is a well-known vulnerability in Kias and Hyundais that makes these cars the preferred target for motivated offenders.

To address the ongoing increase in auto thefts, the NPSC has partnered with several community-based organizations, local stakeholders, and the Newark Police Division to increase awareness of this ongoing problem.

The NPSC created customized flyers to disseminate vital information on how to reduce the risk of victimization by taking proactive steps to mitigate the vulnerabilities present in some Kia and Hyundai car models.

Nearly 60% of all stolen cars in Newark in 2023 were Kias and Hyundais.

Notably, the Lincoln Park neighborhood experienced the highest citywide concentration of Kia and Hyundai car thefts in 2023. To help mitigate the problem, the Lincoln Park Coast Cultural District (LPCCD) deployed this Data-Informed Community Engagement strategy at priority places within their neighborhood, resulting in a significant decrease in the number of stolen vehicles in the first quarter of 2024.
