Reducing the Risk of Robberies Near ATMs
Our most recent analyses indicate that proximity to at-risk ATMs is associated with an increase in robbery incidents. These ATMs are predominantly located within business establishments like liquor stores (37%) and bodegas (24%). Only 10% were located in financial institutions. To mitigate the risk of victimization, the NPSC has developed a data-informed community-led strategy to increase public awareness near at-risk ATM locations. This campaign entails distributing flyers and placing posters near at-risk ATMs. The objective is not to discourage the use of ATMs but to increase public awareness and encourage best practices that minimize the likelihood of victimization.
